This is truly a piece of hand crafted artwork to be handed down for generations. This 21 inch Squash Blossom necklace is crafted from hand made sterling silver beads. The artist actually hammers the sterling silver in a round mold into a half dome then takes two of the half domes and solders the two half domes to create a bead. The edges are ground smooth then the bead is drilled and polished. This was done over 94 times to make this amazing necklace. The necklace starts with a single strand then splits in to a double strand where the shadowbox turquoise and hand made silver blossom bead is soldered on top. Each of these hand made beads measures just over ¼ inch in diameter. The hand made blossom bead and shadowbox turquoise measure about 1 inch in length and 3/8 of an inch in width. There are 14 turquoise & blossom sections finally arriving at the main Squash blossom finale. This center piece measures about 2 inches in diameter and contains 5 turquoise shadowbox pieces arranged in traditional squash blossom fashion. The Squash Blossom design is perhaps one of the most famous of Navajo designs seen across the country. The origin of these designs dates back to the Spanish colonial days and it is believed that the crescent shape of the necklaces main piece was derived from iron bridal ornaments that were found on many of the horses of the Spanish Conquistadors. Silver versions of these designs probably stared sowing up sometime around 1880. |
